Striking Quality and Unusual Form American Eaglehead Artillery Officer's Straight Sword C. 1825. 30" straight blade with delicately engraved floral and military motifs about perfect. Shows no signs of ever having been blued or gilded although there is certainly the possibility it has been carefully hand cleaned. The very large scalloped edge counterguard is completed covered with a deep relief spread wing American eagle and shield surrounded by rays with scrollwork above. The only example of this guard we've ever seen. The knucklebow utilizes a Griffin at the base, is decorated with laurel leaves and exhibits an eaglehead in the center along with a lion's head where the guard enters the beautifully executed eagle head pommel. There is a small turned up reverse counterguard decorated with scrollwork with the quillon also decorated with laurel leaves. Mother of pearl plaque grips perfect with twisted brass wire wrap. The base of the grip exhibits a ferrule decorated with acanthus leaves with cast relief scrollwork on either side of the grip on the crossguard. Retains the original gilt strap and adjusting loop for the sword knot although the knot itself is missing. The hilt retains much of the original gold wash. The brass scabbard exhibits 4 1/2" elaborately engraved panels at each of the ring mounts along with a similarly engraved 8 1/2" panel on the lower section of the scabbard. Scabbard tip also decoratively cast. The scabbard is absolutely perfect. A beautiful American eaglehead in superb condition.
