Standard Form Fine Condition GAR Sword C. 1885. 30" blade, with no fullers and ovoid in cross section, etched for 2/3 its length. The obverse with extensive scrollwork, spread wing eagle with shield and motto surrounded by rays in the center and the date "1865" in a small panel near the top and a small oval bust portrait of Lincoln near the bottom. The reverse with similar scroll work, Large G. A. R. surrounded by rays in the center GAR medal below that and Civil War soldier saluting at the bottom. The blade is clean and bright with just some light pitting in the plain area toward the tip not affecting etching, a bit heavier on the reverse. Blade retains original red wool washer. Brass hilt about perfect with large intertwined GAR on guard surrounded by military motifs eg. anchor, crossed saber etc. Knucklebow with relief cast crossed cannons flanked by leaves in the center, floral rosette where it enters the pommel. Pommel decorated with spread wing eagle/shield on front and scroll work on the back. Relief cast leaves on top. Leather covered grip excellent just showing a few worn spots from honest use, twisted brass wire wrap tight. There is 1/2" decorated brass ferrule at the top of the grip. Steel scabbard retaining much of the original nickel with absolutely no rust, pitting or dents. All brass mounts including throat, leaf decorated ring mounts and drag with crossed flags on the obverse and large star on the reverse. Very nice, and unusually high grade, example with this particular blade etch.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
