    Description

Silver and Gilt European Presentation Sword from the Fist War of Italian Independence, Circa 1849. The sword has an extremely elaborate gilded hilt with an "S" guard ending in a lion's head. The pommel is a gilt close helmet topped with a silver coronet. The gilt grip also has hallmarked heavy silver high-relief overlay. The four central silver panels on the grip have a gilt crest, entwined letters "GG", and two triumphs-of-arms. The ornate guard is engraved, "Al Collo Mse. da passano gli uffli del Regto G. Guardie in attestato di stima e rispetto. Aprile 1849". The silver on the hilt is hallmarked with the crowned crosses of Saints Maurice & Lazarus, the assay mark for the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia. The 32-inch Damascus blade is clean and etched on each side with floral embellishments, triumphs-of-arms and the words, "Dio e la Patria". The sword is housed in a two-ring metal scabbard. The scabbard has considerable rust. The coronet above the pommel is missing one strawberry leaf, else fine.

The sword was presented during the First War of Italian Independence (1848-1849) when the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia was left alone to battle the forces of the Austrian Empire. The campaign which opened with such high expectations in 1848 ended with the Austrian occupation of Lomellina and Alessandria in 1849. King Charles Albert of Piedmont-Sardinia abdicated in favor of his son Victor Emanuel, going to his exile and death.
