S & K US M1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber. Likely part of the original contract purchased form S & K by the US government to 'fill the gap' for US Dragoons in the field until Ames was able to begin the production and distribution of their contract for these sabers. Blade generally smooth and brown with no rust or pitting and just a couple of tiny, really negligible nicks. Marked at the base of the reverse ricasso "S & K" and on the obverse "SOLINGEN". Blade retains the original leather washer. Hilt perfect with dark untouched patina. Grip with twisted brass wire wrap near perfect with just a couple of tiny chips in the leather near the pommel, very sound. Scabbard excellent, generally sooth and dark with just some very old surface rust and a few scattered shallow dents, primarily near the drag. Also retains vestiges of what was an old coat of gold paint. Very nice untouched example of this sword that was the first M1840 issued to US Dragoons.

From the estate of Houston collector Brent Burg.
