    Description

Regulation U.S. M1841 Naval Officer's Sword by Ames. 28" quillback blade white etched for 2/3 its length. Obverse displays floral and scrollwork, arms panoplies and anchor with rays. The reverse displays similar etching but with tucked wing eagle with riband and engraved motto above, and 2 1/2" panel with "United States Navy". Blade generally smooth and gray with no rust pitting or nicks. Etching worn but all visible. Regulation style hilt with front folding guard displaying, in relief, leaves and acorns on stippled background. The smaller reverse folding counterguard is plain. Scrollwork cross guard with acorn finials. Knucklebow with cast decoration and slotted for sword knot where it enters the pommel. Very fine eaglehead pommel with nicely delineated feathers and full backstrap. Carved ivory grip with a couple of old age hairlines but perfectly sound. Decorative 1/2" brass ferrule at the base of the grip. The hilt retains 90% of the original gilt. Leather scabbard with two old repairs to weak/broken spots. Intact and could be neatened up considerably. Regulation style mounts with two carrying rings and nicely decorated frog stud. Decorative engraving along the bottom edge of the top mount, fouled anchor and decorative edge engraving on middle mount, and decorative edge engraving with leaves and acorns, identical to the guard, covering the lower mount. Mounts also show decorative engraving on the edges on the reverse, along with separately affixed Ames/Springfield logo scroll on back of top mount. The mounts retain 20% of the original gilt. Nice representative example of this scarce and desirable Mexican War period regulation US Naval officer's sword.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
