    Description

Rare Form American Naval Officer's Straight Sword C. 1825. 32" straight blade decorated for half its length with fire blue and engraved military and floral decorations highlighted with gilt. Blade excellent retaining 50% of the fire blue and gilt. The balance a smooth light gray patina with no rust or edge nicks and just some minor salt and peppering at the tip. The guard exhibits crossed anchors and cutlasses overlaid with a tucked wing American eagle with shield on its breast. Lion head quillon with scroll decoration with a lion's head rosette in the center of the knuckle bow. Rather small open mouthed eaglehead characteristic of Naval swords. One piece ivory/bone grip fluted on both sides with nice mellow patina and perfect. There is a 3/8" decorative brass ferrule at the base of the grip. There is a small reverse turned up counterguard. The leather scabbard retains the original top mount/throat with traces of silver, single ring and relief decorated frog stud. The scabbard appears to have two old repaired breaks with no loss and there is a break 14" from the tip that can also be easily repaired. The scabbard has no lower or middle mount. A very rare form of American Naval officer's sword worthy of the necessary scabbard restoration.
