Pre Civil War High Grade Silver Grip Presentation M1850 Foot Officer's Sword to an Officer with Civil War History Inscribed on the back side of the middle mount, "Presented by the / Brooklyn / City Guard / to Capt. R. V. Thorne Jr. / Sept. 1859". 32" unetched foot officer's style blade about mint with just some minor scattered staining. Marked only with a crowned head on the obverse ricasso. Regulation style hilt with finely pierced scroll work guard, without the usually encountered flowers. High grade cast decoration on the quillon. The pommel cap displays oak leaves and acorns. The heavy silver grip is engraved on both sides with elaborate scroll work and leaf motifs. Hilt overall about perfect, but retaining only traces of the gold wash, doubtless evidencing some honest use.
Scabbard with screw fastened top mount having a separately affixed panel with arms panoply surrounding a shield with scroll work at the base. The middle mount, with the inscription on the reverse has a separately affixed panel also displaying an arms panoply with scroll work at top and bottom 6 1/4" lower mount also utilizes a separately affixed panel with arms panoply covering nearly the full panel with American shield in the center and wreath and scroll work at the top. The drag is composed of pierced scroll work. All mounts about perfect and retaining much of the gold wash on the faces but only traces on the reverse. While we are of the opinion the chagreen scabbard is, indeed, Civil War period, we believe it is a 20th century addition to the sword, likely to replace a damaged scabbard.
Richard V. W. Thorne Jr. served prior to the war with the Brooklyn City Guards. With the outbreak of war the unit mustered in, along with Thorne, as Co. G of the 13th New York Inf. Militia. He mustered out on 8/6/61 and rejoined the regiment as Volunteer Infantry on 5/28/62 and mustered out on 9/12/62.
A very attractive sword that doubtless saw Civil War service.
