Non-Reg Civil War Staff And Field Officer's Sword. Hilt in form corresponds generally to the US M1850, however the basket is pierced with a spread wing eagle with US above surrounded with scrollwork. Scrollwork decoration on the top and face of the quillon, along with scroll work cast on the face of the knucklebow. Oak leaves and acorns on the face of the pommel. Sharskin grip shows honest wear on the underside but 90% intact, the brass wire wrap is loose. Hilt overall with deep dark untouched patina. The 32" blade marked "Clauberg / Solingen" with standing knight on reverse. Blade shows traces of the original etching but now generally smooth and brown with scattered old surface rust but with a few tiny areas of light pitting and would clean nicely. Rather scarce form that could easily be neatened up considerably. There is no scabbard.

From the estate of Houston collector Brent Burg.
