Description

Mid 18th Century Scottish Basket Hilt Broadsword. 39 1/2-inches in overall length, with a 33-inch blade. Blade is slightly ovoid in cross section and employs a rudimentary 1 1/2-inch ricasso. Shallow 7-inch fuller which bears the mark: (seraph) I+O+H+A+N+S (seraph) on each side. Basket assembled in parts and forged together. There is no quillon and basket is marked on underside: S and I A. All piercings bear hand cut decorations on the edges. Conical pommel is constructed with a capstan and decorated with both curved and straight incised lines. Sharkskin grip with brass and silver twisted wire.
Condition: Very good. Blade smooth and grey with scattered salt and peppering. Basket with deep dark patina inside and smooth grey on the outside with light surface rust. Grip is in great condition.
