Massive US Cavalry Officer's Saber Based On A Reconfigured French Guards Saber. 37" straight blade with two narrow deep fullers running the length of the blade. French proofmarks on the base of the blade on obverse with number 6 at the base of the blade on reverse. Back of the blade is devoid of maker's marks usually encountered on these swords and doubtless removed to make it more attractive to the American market. The blade is absolutely mint retaining 100% of the original bright luster. Massive brass guard with three outboard branches, the innermost decorated with deep relief cast leaf designs on the face. Heavy cast scrollwork and floral rosette where the guard enters the pommel which is decorated with deep relief laurel leaf and berry design with floral rosette in the center. The guard is slotted for a sword knot. The quillon is decorated with large relief cast shell motif with large floral rosette. The central portion of the guard is a 3 1/4" diameter circle, decorated on both the outer and inner faces with deep relief laurel leaf and berry motifs. There is a rudimentary branch at the front where it joins the guard/quillon composed of scroll work. The center portion of the circular section mounts a heavy bras eight pointed rosette which is integrally cast. The face of this rosette is decorated with a silver rosette of the same configuration composed of rays with a superb quality brass spread win American eagle with shield on breast and riband above mounted in the center. The grip is of horn with just one tiny chip at the top else perfect and wrapped with twisted silver wire. The hilt overall retains 70% of the original gilt and is really stunning. The all steel scabbard is about mint, bright and clean with absolutely no rust, pitting or dents. Throat mounted with a small screw and two ring mounts with iron carrying rings. An absolutely magnificent sword, clearly meant for use by a very large officer (46" overall) and only the second example we've ever seen with this being by far the finest.
