Description
Magnificent Staff Officer's Sword Custom Made by Ames for the Mexican Navy Circa 1840-1845. Doubtless unique and based on the condition very possibly fabricated and never delivered because of the outbreak of hostilities between the US and Mexico in 1846.The sword is absolutely mint as new. The 29" double edged blade with narrow central fuller etched for 2/3 of its length on a frosted background. Obverse with an odd potpourri of motifs including laurel leaves and berries, scrollwork panel with a caduceus at the top, the central theme of a fouled anchor flanked by leaves and rays, and oak leaves and acorns. The reverse includes the same laurel leaves and berries at top, oak leaves and acorns at bottom but includes tucked wing American eagle with engraved motto in riband above with stars and rays and a 4" long panel that includes a trident, sails, crossed cannons with anchor and intertwined vine below. Ames logo near the base of the blade "N. P. Ames / Cutler / Springfield." Blade absolutely mint. The cross guard is a massive spread wing eagle with exceptional definition of every detail. The grip is heavily silver plated with alternating vertical panels engraved with scrollwork and geometric decoration. There is a 1/8" leaf decorated brass ferrule at top and bottom. Classic plumed helmet pommel. Chain guard with decorated interlocking triple links. The entire hilt also absolutely mint retaining 100% of the original gilt and silver.
The brass scabbard is absolutely unique. Elaborate geometric/scrollwork engraved panels at throat, ring mounts and a 15" long panel on the lower portion of the scabbard. Frog stud on top ring mount decorated with a fouled anchor. Exquisitely engraved between the ring mount panels is a Mexican eagle with snake, holding cactus in its talons, with fouled anchor below. Engraved above "REPUBLICA" and below "MEXICANA" with rays above and below. The reverse of the scabbard is plain. Again absolutely mint, retaining 100% of the original gilt. Ames scroll on the reverse of the scabbard identical to the blade logo.
