    Description

Magnificent Silver Grip Superb Quality Presentation U.S. M1860 Staff & Field Officer's Sword. The sword is overall absolutely mint and without question one of the finest quality M1860 Staff & Field swords we've ever seen. 30 1/2" blade diamond shaped in cross section. The upper 10 1/4" of the obverse bears the following etched inscription on a frosted background; "Presented to Lieut. Frank Longley U. S. A. By Kalamazoo Co No 9, U. R. K. of P." The entire inscription intertwined with vines. The lower third of the blade is etched and engraved on a frosted panel with gold overlaid leaves, intertwined US with rays, arms panoply, small panel with intertwined script FL (Frank Longley) with additional scroll and leaf motifs below. The reverse bears similar motifs, also overlaid with gold but includes a panel with oak leaves and acorns in the center and on the ricasso in relief "THE / HENDERSON-AMES CO. / KALAMAZOO / MICHIGAN. A truly magnificent blade. Hilt very heavy and displaying extremely elaborate decoration. Guard with spread wing eagle with American shield on breast and surrounded by rays. The lower portion of the knucklebow splits forming a rim around the base of the guard and the crossguard, both of which exhibit very deep relief, highly detailed, cast acorns and oak leaves. The quillon bears an American shield on the face. Knucklebow with heavy scrollwork, acorns and oak leaves, and an American shield on the face in the center inside a decorative oval. The pommel is decorated with leaves, oval panels and a scaled riband with a mushroom like cap and a closed capstan, also decorated on the top. The silver grip with swirled alternating bands of laurel and oak leaves and triple brass wire wrap. 3/8" ferrule heavily decorated with leaves and scrolls at top and bottom. The folding counterguard edged with oak leaves and acorns and decorated with scrollwork, again in very deep relief and highly detailed.

Nickled scabbard also mint. The 4 7/8" upper mount with two carrying rings exhibits multiple piercings with a tucked wing American eagle with shield and riband at the top. The ring mount itself decorated with oak leaves. The 4 3/8" middle mount with a single ring, also with multiple piercings and scrollwork with large arms panoply in the center. The 5 7/8" lower mount with scrollwork, multiple piercings and hand engraved decoration on the drag. The reverse of the lower mount is virtually identical to the obverse. While the two upper mounts display the detailed pierced scrollwork without any additional motifs on the reverse. The mounts, while perfect and retaining 100% of the original gilt exhibit a few stains, easily cleaned with ammonia.

A really stunningly beautiful American sword and presented to a Regular U. S. Army officer. From the estate of Houston collector Brent Burg.
