    Description

M1859 U. S. Marine Corps Officer's or Staff NCO Sword. Very fine example of this scarce sword about which controversy still reigns. Although now generally accepted as the Marine staff NCO sword of the Civil War period, period photographs of Marine officers in field dress, clearly show them carrying this exact sword. This example has a 31 1/2" blade profusely etched and hand engraved for 2/3 its length. Obverse with floral/scroll work, arms panoplies including American shield, spread wing eagle with motto in riband above. The W. H. Horstmann & Sons / Philadelphia logo just above the ricasso. There is a crowned head proof mark and numeral 1 stamped on the ricasso. The obverse is also profusely etched and engraved with floral and scroll work and stands of arms/flags, one of which includes an American flag. In a panel in the center of the blade, in 1/2" high block letters, is "U. S. M. C." Blade also etched "Iron Proof" on the back. The sword retains the original leather washer. The hilt is that of a regulation US M1850 foot officer's sword with dark brown leather wrap and twisted brass wire. Hilt is about perfect with very nice untouched patina and traces of the original gold wash. The scabbard is also the standard M1850 foot officer's sword pattern, the three brass mounts excellent retaining traces of the original gilt and just one dent on the back side of the lower mount. Body of the scabbard very sound, but does exhibit crackling of the finish and some scattered flaking. An exceptionally nice untouched example of this very scarce US Marine sword, regardless of the school of identification you cleave to.
