    Description

Lot of Two 19 Century U.S. Officers' Swords. Including: 1.) Infantry officers' sword with a 31 ½-inch straight, single-edge blade with broad fullers running to within about 14-inches of the tip. The upper portion of the blade has blued panels with panoplies of arms and foliate designs which were once accented in gilt. The grips are white bone with horizontal lines. A Roman helmet and Roman sword decorate the obverse langet; the reverse langet has a shell design. Brass scabbard with two mounting rings and a frog stud. No visible markings, though some have suggested it is of French manufactures. 2.) European-made (probably French) non-regulation Staff & Field officers' sword with a 32-inch slightly curved blade which is engraved with the typical panoplies of arms, eagle, "US" and foliate designed. The gilded-brass hilt has an open worked guard with eagle and shield and a small shamrock shape in the openwork of the counterguard. The grips are fish skin wrapped with wire. The scabbard is iron with brass mounts and drag. A most attractive sword.

Condition: 1.) About very good. The blade is clean but lacking the gilt accents as noted; the bone handle has a vertical crack and the hilt is a bit loose on the blade; the scabbard displays small dents and dings. 2.) Near excellent.
