    Description

Inscribed, Silver Grip, Civil War Presentation Grade Staff Officer's Sword. As noted in the introduction, while a beautiful, absolutely authentic, Civil War period sword, we are of the opinion the inscription is, in fact, post period.

31" blade absolutely mint, the obverse displaying a central etched panel with spread wing eagle and hand engraved details including motto, the reverse with central etched panel with large US also exhibiting hand engraved details. Marked on the reverse ricasso "COLLINS & CO. / HARTFORD / CONN. / 1862" and just above that an etched panel "SCHUYLER / HARTLEY & / GRAHAM / NEW-YORK". Again the overall blade absolutely mint and retains the original thin leather washer. The elaborate hilt, which retains most of the original gilt, features the basket pierced with very heavy scroll and leaf designs, along with heavy scroll work on the quillon and where the guard enters the pommel. The interior of the guard also displays scroll engraving at several spots. Pommel cap also exhibits heavy cast scroll work, both incised and in relief. The silver grip with plain panels alternating with those cast with deep scalloped decoration.

The German silver scabbard is near perfect with just one minor dent on the reverse 3" above the lower mount. The brass mounts are all profusely engraved on the face with leaf/scroll designs and are about perfect, retaining much of the original gilt. The very heavy ring mounts are deeply cast with laurel leaf and berry designs with brass carrying rings, one slightly bent.

The sword is script engraved between the upper mounts "Presented To / Capt. William G. Boggs / From His Friends", although, as previously stated, we believe the inscription was added post Civil War. Boggs enlisted in the 33rd New Jersey Infantry on 8/14/63, was wounded at Chattanooga 11/23/63 and died of those wounds 12/19/63.

A beautiful sword, again, however, with what we believe to be a post period inscription.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
