    High Grade Civil War U.S. M1850 Foot Officer's Sword Presented to Capt. John D. Frank, 1st New York Light Artillery. Frank enlisted as Captain in Battery G on 10/21/61 and was discharged for disability on 4/4/63. Battery G 1st New York Light Artillery fought with the Army of the Potomac through the Seven Days, Antietam and numerous other engagements during Frank's tenure in the Battery.

    The 31 1/4" blade is mint. Etched for half its length on the obverse with leaf/scroll motifs, arms panoplies and a spread wing American eagle, all on a frosted background. The reverse depicts similar motifs but with a large block US. Blade overall absolutely perfect. The blade retains the original leather washer. Hilt of regulation style exhibiting exceptional quality work. and retaining 80% of the original gilt. Sharkskin grip with triple brass wire wrap near perfect just showing minor signs of wear. The steel scabbard is perfect with nice smooth dark patina and absolutely no rust, pitting or dents. The two ring mounts are each 3 3/4" long with the upper having relief cast motifs of armor and crossed cannons and the lower an arms panoply with helmet, crossed swords etc. Both mounts terminate at either end with deep relief scrollwork. The bottom mount is 5 3/4" long including drag and features crossed American flags with American shield beneath and terminating in relief scrollwork All mounts perfect and retaining 50% original gilt. The reverse of the mounts are plain. The reverse of the top mount bears the following inscription in block and script letters; "PRESENTED / to / Our Capt. Jno D. Frank / by the enlisted men of Light Battery / G. 1st N. Y. Artillery as a token / of their Esteem February 1st A.D. 1862".
