German Made U.S. Model 1840 Cavalry Officers' Saber. 33 ½" bright, slightly curved blade (a likely replacement) is etched with non-regulation pattern of floral and military designs, an American eagle, a ribbon with the motto "E Pluribus Unum" on the obverse and similar decoration and a "U.S." on the reverse. Reverse ricasso with a "W. Clauberg / Solingen" maker's mark. Top of blade etched "IRON PROOF". Gilded-brass hilt. Engraved "RB" monogram on forward pommel. Interestingly, two five-pointed brass stars were soldered to the upper portion of the forward counter guard though one is now lacking. The fish skin grips and twisted gilt wire are recent replacements. The iron scabbard displays many light to moderate dents and there is a hairline crack on the forward edge. Upper mounting ring possibly replaced. A solid example worthy of proper restoration.
