    General Anthony McAuliffe's Officers Sword

    General Anthony "Nuts" McAuliffe's U.S. Model 1902 Officers' Saber Accompanied by Signed Lot Card From the Army & Navy Relief Fund Auction. 30-inch slightly curved, bright blade. 35 ¼-inches overall. Both sides of blade etched with ornate floral scroll, panoplies of arms, a spread wing eagle and "U.S.". Reverse ricasso marked "SPRINGFIELD ARMORY / SPRINGFIELD / MASS. USA". Grooved wooden grips. All metal parts of the hilt and scabbard finished in nickeled steel. Accompanied by the original typed Army & Navy Relief Fund Auction lot identification 3 x 5-inch card. At the lower edge of the card McAuliffe has signed his name, beneath which he has written "Nuts!", his single word response to the superior German force's request for the surrender of the 101st Airborne troops under his command at the Battle of the Bulge.

    Condition: Excellent. Blade displays only trivial scabbard wear; scabbard with carrying wear to the plating on the reverse side.
