    Description

French Made American Officer's Saber Nearly Identical To Fig. 142 in Peterson "Marine Officer's Sword, 1804-1818" Although the example in Peterson is identified as a Marine sword because, it has provenance specifically identifying it to a Marine officer, this form of saber was popular with Marine officers and this example could well have a similar point of origin. 33 1/4" curved blade is without adornment and exhibits smooth dark patina with absolutely no rust, pitting or edge nicks. The heavy brass hilt features large, 2 1/4" oval langets, the obverse of which is decorated with a deep relief cast American eagle holding arrows and olive branches, with motto in riband in arc above, and scroll work below. The reverse langet is undecorated with an incised line around the edge. The 1/8" thick flat cross guard terminates in a huge eaglehead quillon. 1/8" thick stirrup shaped knucklebow with decorated disc at the top where it turns to enter the mouth of a lion head on the face of the pistol grip style pommel. The pommel includes an integrally cast backstrap that extends 1 1/2" down the back of the one piece wood grip. The flattened one piece wood grip is delicately checkered on both faces with incised line decoration on both sides, and nice rich patina. There are several chips at the base of the obverse side of the grip above and to one side of the langet and a couple of small chips on the reverse at the same location. Brass hilt overall perfect with very nice dark untouched patina. There is no sheath. A most rare American saber in a very desirable form.

    Estimate: $1,500 - up.
