As Beautiful As a Sword Can Be
Exquisite Model 1902 Presentation Sword. This is certainly among the most beautiful swords we've ever offered for auction. The workmanship is fantastic, and the sword is in untouched condition. The sword was presented to Dr. Rudolph J. Schiffman, a prominent Pasadena, California physician, manufacturer and businessman. The bright, slightly curved 30½" blade is etched with floral designs and the obverse is engraved "Rudolph J. Schiffman"; and the reverse side is engraved with twenty-three names on scrolls. Presumably these were either business colleagues or members of a local California militia group who presented the sword to Dr. Schiffman. The blade is maker marked "The/ Henderson/Ames-Co./ Kalamazoo/ Mich.". The hilt is gilt brass and ornately and lavishly decorated with floral designs. The guard is adorned with a beautifully enameled U.S. eagle and shield. The ivory handle has a warm patina. The heavy scabbard is likewise decorated in a style commensurate with that of the sword. The gilt-brass mounts and drag are intricately decorated with eagles, patriotic and military motifs and are voided to further enhance the details. Schiffman's enameled intertwined "RJS" initials are mounted between the mounts. The body of the scabbard is gilted and ornately engraved on the obverse. The consignor has gone to great lengths to research Dr. Rudolph J. Schiffman but few clues are present to identify the circumstances by which Dr. Schiffman was presented this outstanding sword. A large packet of research accompanies the sword and will certainly provide a basis for future research.Auction Info
