    Description

Exceptional U.S. Eaglehead Officer's Straight Sword, Circa 1830. 30 1/4" straight blade about mint. Lower half with gilt highlighted engraved military and scroll work decorations on fire blue panel which terminates in an elaborate scroll. The blade retains 98% of the original fire blue, much of the original gilt, the balance with 100% mint luster. Large lobe guard with cast decoration including ship, seated liberty, anchor and eagle with shield on its breast. Knucklebow with deeply cast elaborate decoration which includes central theme of lion head. Open beak eagle head with excellent feather delineation. Mother of pearl plaque grips about perfect, just a few tiny flakes at the top. Grip exhibits sheet brass decoration at both sides with ivy leaf motif and 1/2" sheet brass ferrule at the base decorated with embossed oak leaves. The turned down quillon, and small upturned counterguard on the back both with cast decoration. Hilt perfect, retaining 80% of the original gilt. Brass scabbard near perfect, utilizing simply two carrying rings at the top. Decorated its entire length with profuse leaf, floral and scroll designs including a 7" section at the tip. The reverse of the scabbard is plain, exhibiting a few scattered tiny dents near the tip. A truly exceptional example of this very popular and desirable form.
