    Description

Exceptional Example, 'Floating CS' Confederate Staff Officer's Sword By Leech & Rigdon, Memphis, Tenn. Although some controversy exists as to the exact manufacturer of this sword, and some minor variations exist, this example is generally recognized as the 'Leech and Rigdon pattern'. 30" slightly curved blade with unstopped fuller that extends to within 1" of the guard and 9" of the tip. Blade really excellent, generally bright and clean with just some scattered dark gray patina and a touch of salt and peppering at the tip. Classic form hilt with large C S between the two outboard branches and some cast decoration on the face projection from the inboard that attaches to the guard and the top of the quillon. Very narrow slit for sword knot at the top of the guard, the pommel plain with the exception of the cast line around the top. There are also cast lines of decoration around the edges on the inside face of the guard. Turned down counterguard on the reverse and distinctive iron rivet where the knucklebow enters and attaches to the pommel cap. Black leather grip near perfect with just a couple of small chips, twisted brass wire tight and complete. Black leather scabbard with heavy backstitched seam near perfect with no finish crazing or flaking. Brass mounts with line decoration, round faced ring mounts and brass carrying rings. The mounts are attached to the scabbard with brass screws. Mounts excellent with just a few minor dents/bends, all easily restored. The back of the lower mount exhibits what appears to be 'pitting' but is apparently just a poor finish when the sword was fabricated. Very fine example of this very popular and recognizable form of Confederate staff officer's sword. Ex-Steve Hess Collection.
