Engraved, Thoroughly-Documented 1867-Dated New Mexico Metal Cane. This remarkable artifact belonged to a Dartmouth graduate named William T. Parker (1850-1925), who had a long career as an army surgeon. In 1867 he was serving as a 1st class hospital steward assigned to Fort Cummings, New Mexico, serving with the 125th United States Colored Troops. Ft. Cummings was in the heart of hostile Apache territory, and in his Annals of Old Fort Cummings New Mexico 1867-8 (written decades later), he describes in colorful detail the dangerous circumstances under which he served. On pages 28-29 he describes one incident where, on an errand for a superior office to the Pony Express Ranch, he found himself alone and potentially at risk in a remote canyon: "The young soldier [Parker] paused an instant as he stepped out into the lonely night, and brought his pistol well within reach. In his hand he carried a Mexican cane. Made of a large steel ramrod and mounted with an ebony handle, a ten cent piece fastened at the end, and a Mexican dollar for the guard, it looked more like a foil than a walking stick, but was no mean weapon when skillfully handled." This is that exact cane.

Two silver bands around the ebony handle are engraved: "Fort Cummings New Mexico 1867" and "W. T. Parker Med. Dept. U.S. Army." In excellent condition, it is a remarkable artifact from the Apache wars in New Mexico. Accompanied by a rare hardbound copy of Parker's memoirs (edition of 500) and an extensive file of research on Parker and his military career. Length 35.5".
