Description
Edo Period Katana, Early Shinto - Mishina School [Mumei].An early Shinto period sword (ca. 1596-1650), attributed to the Mishina School tradition and in the style of Tamba no Kami Yoshimichi. The blade has a nagasa of 61.2 cm (24 inches) with a curvature (sori) of 1.2 cm (approximately 1/2-inch). It is mounted in traditional koshirae, including a lacquered black saya measuring 27 7/8-inches (70.8 cm), which bears a faded family crest (kamon) and shows some splitting near the tsuba resting area. The tsuka retains its intact ray skin (samegawa) and features chrysanthemum-themed menuki. The tang (nakago) is mumei (unsigned), pierced with two mekugi-ana, and displays a deep, even patina consistent with early Shinto craftsmanship. A visible hada (grain) is present, complemented by a well-defined hamon and distinctive forging patterns. Note: Accompanying the sword is its Torokusho (Jūhō Tōkenrui Tōrokushō), Registration No. 23802, issued by the Nara Prefectural Board of Education on November 18, 2005 (Heisei 17).
Condition: The blade remains in a stable state of polish, allowing the metallurgical features characteristic of Mishina workmanship to be appreciated. Despite age-related wear, including the mentioned saya splits, the piece retains the dignity and aesthetic qualities of its period.
