Civil War US M1860 Naval Cutlass. Blade generally smooth and gray with just some scattered staining and a few scattered patches of salt and peppering. Excellent markings including 1862 date. Brass guard very good with just two small nicks and one tiny crack, no loss, along the bottom outboard edge, all minor. The remainder of the cup and pommel excellent with nice patina. Marked "5M/838" on the quillon. The wood grip is in poor condition with a number of chips and retaining only a small portion of the leather, with an old coat of lacquer. The scabbard is really excellent. Copper riveted back and tip, brass frog stud. Very sound and supple with absolutely no cracks/breaks and just some scattered finish crackling and very minor flaking. Grip readily restorable, else a nice representative example of the M1860 cutlass with an exceptional scabbard.
