Civil War U.S. M1850 Foot Officer's Sword with Inscription. As pointed out in the introduction, while this is a fine, absolutely authentic, Civil War sword, we are of the opinion the inscription is post Civil War period.

30 1/2" blade excellent to near mint, marked "P.D.L." on the reverse ricasso. Blade etched for 2/3 its length with arms panoplies including American shield, floral/scrollwork, and spread wing eagle with etched motto above on obverse. Reverse with similar etching including American flag and large US. Blade exhibits just the slightest wear else perfect. Retains the original red wool washer. Regulation style hilt retaining much of the original gilt, the sharkskin and brass wire wrapped grip about perfect.

Leather scabbard excellent to near perfect with just a few scuffs and the slightest of surface crazing in a few areas. Plain brass mounts also about perfect, with just a few tiny shallow dents on the lower mount and retaining traces of gilt. Inscribed in script on the top mount, "Presented to / Major J. Parker Gould / by the / Regimental Officers / of the / 13th M. V. Infy Regt / July 15, 1861". Again, we believe the inscription to be post Civil War period. Gould enlisted in the 13th Mass. as Major 7/16/61 and was subsequently commissioned Col. of the 59th Mass. on 4/25/64. He died of wounds suffered at Petersburg 2/30/64 at City Point , Va. 8/21/64. Accompanied by a complete set of records.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
