    Description

Civil War Horstmann M1860 Light Cavalry Officer's Saber. 36" curved blade etched for one half its length. Obverse with arms panoplies, crossed cannons, scrollwork with "W. H. HORSTMANN / & SONS / PHILADELPHIA" in etched panel at base, small king's head proof on ricasso. Reverse with similar etch but incorporating liberty cap. Also leaf etching on the back of the blade with "IRON PROOF" at the hilt. Blade excellent with just some scattered staining and much original luster. Absolutely no rust, pitting or nicks. Sharkskin grip about perfect, spring like wire wrap with just one 'kink'. The outward branch of the hilt is slightly bent, else the guard is perfect with dark untouched patina and cast leaf motifs, on top and bottom, where the branches join the hilt, and on the face of the pommel cap. Plain (typical of the Horstmann sabers) nickled scabbard with some scattered bubbling/peeling with some old surface rust, could be cleaned nicely. A very heavy dent on the reverse near the drag. The drag is very large and fancy with scalloped edge, also typical of these Horstmann M1860 sabers. Good representative example of this rather scarce Civil War officer's saber.

From the estate of Houston collector Brent Burg.
