Civil War Brass Scabbard Presentation Grade Sword Presented to Captain Minotta A. Pruyn, 1st New York Mounted Rifles. Pruyn enlisted in the regiment on Nov. 6 1861 as a Lieutenant and was promoted to Captain in July of 1862. He was subsequently promoted to Major on Aug. 22, 1865, having been appointed Assistant Superintendent of Freedmen for Caroline Co. Va. on Aug. 9th 1865. The regiment was engaged throughout the war in southern Virginia and North Carolina, losing 32 men killed and mortally wounded.

The 36 1/4" curved cavalry blade was made by Klingenthal and incorporates etching for half its length of floral/scroll motifs with large arms panoply in the center on both sides of the blade. All etching executed on frosted background. Small oval proof marks on the obverse at the base with the back of the blade etched with scroll work for 8" from the hilt. The blade is overall about mint with just a few very minor scattered stains and retaining much of the original luster. Retains the original leather washer. The hilt incorporates a basket guard profusely pierced with tucked wing eagle on shield with stars above, flanked by flag panoplies and a wreath. Also much additional scrollwork, highlighted by hand engraving. There is a small reverse counterguard pierced with floral/scrollwork and relief leaf decoration on top and bottom where it joins the guard. Knuckle bow with deep relief cast scrollwork and spiral decoration including heavy scrollwork where it enters the pommel. Slotted for a knot. The pommel exhibits leaf decoration cast on the top with the face of a gorgon's head with snakes on the front. Full backstrap with decorative 3/8" brass finial at the base of the grip. The grip is of white sharkskin with triple brass wire wrap. Grip and hilt all about perfect retaining traces of the original gilt.

The all brass scabbard with brass throat and 2 1/4" ring mounts elaborately embossed with leaf and scrollwork on stippled background. The 6" lower mount even more elaborately decorated with with scroll and floral work on stippled background with scrollwork on the drag. The mounts exhibit the same decoration on the reverse. Inscribed on the obverse between the ring mounts with old English and script letters; "Presented to / Capt. M. A. Pruyn. / by his Company 1st N. Y. Mounted Rifles / as a token of their esteem / Aug. 25th 1862". Which is shortly after Pruyn's promotion to captain. Scabbard with one negligible dent on obverse, and a noticeable dent on reverse, else about perfect with nice untouched patina, traces of gilt and clearly showing honest wear and use.

Beautiful sword in fine condition with early presentation to an officer, who fought throughout the war, likely with this sword at his side.
