Circa 1850 U.S. Militia Staff Officer's Sword by Ames with Inscription. As noted in the introduction, although a superb original example of the C. 1850 US Militia Staff Officer's sword, we are of the opinion the inscription is post period.

30" straight blade with single narrow central fuller about mint. Etched for half its length with scrollwork, arms panoplies and central theme of spread wing American eagle with rays on obverse, Ames logo in gilt panel under the guard at the base of the blade. The reverse displays similar etching but with and American shield and large block US surrounded by rays. Very pretty blade. Classic cruciform style hilt with the center section of the guard recessed to accept the scabbard. Mother of pearl plaque grips with wire wrap about perfect. Plumed closed face helmet pommel with double brass chain guard. The hilt retains 90% of the original gilt.

The all brass scabbard exhibits extensive embossed/engraved decoration at the ring mounts and for 4" at the rudimentary drag. Scabbard about perfect with no dents and retaining 60% of the original gilt. Utilizes two carrying rings at the top and one below. Ames / Chicopee logo on the back of the scabbard at the throat. Between the ring mounts is the following inscription, "Presented to / (in old English script) Brig. Gen. F. Wheaton / Nov. 1862 / by the officers on his Staff". Again, while very nicely done we do not believe this inscription to be period.
Wheaton received his Brigadier's commission in November of 1862 and saw heavy action throughout the war being commissioned Major General 13 March 1865. Accompanied by records. A very pretty sword.
