Birdhead Pommel American Militia Officer's Sword With Broken Blade. 30" curved blade with a clean break 10" from the tip with a charming period repair using a 1 3/4" X 3/8" iron strap on each side which are riveted to the blade to repair the break. Blade overall generally smooth with just some light scattered surface rust. Gilt decorated engraved decoration alternating with white etched scrollwork panels all on a fireblue background covering half of the blade, Retains most of the gilt highlighting and 70% of the fire blue. Shallow reverse P guard with profusely decorated knucklebow and disc quillon. Birdhead pommel with full backstrap and decorative 3/8" brass ferrule at the base of the nicely carved bone grip, with just one tiny chip at the top. The sword retains 2/3 of the original leather scabbard with the top and middle mounts decorated with incised lines. Two carrying rings and frog stud. Interestingly the scabbard is broken and missing exactly where the blade was broken. Hilt and mounts retain 50% of the original gilt. Interesting sword.

From the estate of Houston collector Brent Burg.
