    Description

Beautiful Presentation Grade Civil War U.S. Non-Regulation Staff and Field Officers' Sword. 32-inch slightly curved bright blade with no visible maker's mark. Gilt-backed floral decoration and panoply of arms on the reverse side of the blade; and gilt-backed U.S. eagle on the obverse. Marked "IRON PROOF" on the back of the blade. Gilded brass hilt with half-basket guard pierced with oak leaf and acorn motif and "US". Eagle head quillon. Forward part of pommel with a U.S. eagle design; engraved pommel cap accented with a central carnelian stone surrounded by 16 small glass or garnet drops. Smooth silver grip with twisted-brass wire wrapping. German-silver scabbard with ornate gilded-brass mounts. The upper obverse mount features a spread-wing eagle; the lower mount a panoply of arms and the drag a soldier holding a rifle with two flags in the background. The reverse of the mounts are engraved with simple geometric scroll; the lower mount with a "US", the upper with a blank panel for the inscription. The carrying rings are in the form of twisted wire.

Condition: Excellent. The blade is bright with spotting from about 6-inches back from the point from scabbard storage. The majority of the gilt remains behind the engraving. The hilt retains about 50% or the gilt. The scabbard is clean with one small horizontal dent on the obverse side near the drag. Traces of gilt remain on the brass mounts.
