American Officer's Saber C. 1815 By Davis & Brown, Boston. 30" curved blade with single fuller along the back edge. Blade generally smooth and gray with one chip at the top edge of the tip. Just two small patches on the reverse with very light pitting and old surface rust. Blade with engraved decoration for half its length with the obverse displaying floral/scroll motifs, a primitive American eagle with shield on breast and stars above, and the makers logo near the base "DAVIS & / BROWN / Warranted / Boston. Samuel Davis and Robert J. Brown were in business as military outfitters from 1809 - 1820. All brass hilt with reverse P guard with plain langets and disc quillon. Slotted at the top for knot. Birdhead pommel with full backstrap decorated for its length with 1/4" wide notches. Leather grip with double twisted brass wire wrap excellent, with just a few minor bends in the wire but completely intact with the leather sound showing no cracking or flaking. There is a 1/4" wide decorative brass ferrule at the base. Hilt excellent with dark untouched patina. Scarce as a marked American sword from this period.

From the estate of Houston collector Brent Burg.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
