American Eaglehead Officer's Sword C. 1830 By F. W. Widman. A classic example of Widman's work. 30" straight blade decorated for half its length with fire blue and gilt highlighted engraved decorations. Marked with a large "W" in the gilt band at the base of the blade on the obverse. The fireblue decoration terminates in scrolls on both sides and the blade retains 90% of the original fireblue and gilt decoration. The remainder of the blade is bright and clean with touches of luster and some tiny, really negligible nicks. Retains the original thin leather washer. The guard with spread wing eagle and shield, and terminates in a scroll. Knucklebow with scroll decoration and unusual 1/2" extension at the base that terminates in a curl. Deeply cast scroll decoration where the knucklebow enters the slender eaglehead. Grip tightly wrapped with twisted copper wire with a 1/2" vine and leaf ferrule at the base. Hilt overall perfect with nice untouched patina. Brass scabbard with two ring mounts and decorated frog stud. Leaf and rosette engraved decoration between the ring mounts and the lower portion of the scabbard with broad leaf and rosette vine engraved decoration as often observed on Widman swords. Scabbard with very nice untouched patina and just a couple of really negligible dents. A very nice sword by one of America's most desirable and innovative makers.
