Absolutely Exquisite European, Probably German, Hunting Sword Dated 1733 Mounted as a Small Sword. A unique form we have not previously encountered. 24 1/4' overall, the 18" flat blade, with deep narrow fuller along the back and 6" false edge. The obverse of the blade displays a 3" deeply etched panel at the base with a lengthy inscription in German and bearing the date 1733, also appears to be a month and day and possibly a presentation. The panel also incorporates scroll work and retains 50% of the original gilt. Engraved just above the panel is a 1 1/2" floral decoration on a base. The reverse of the blade displays another 3" etched panel at the base with the identical floral work just above. This panel incorporates primarily scroll work on a lined background with the central theme of a stag. Retains 80% of the original gilt. Also gilded incised line decoration with a polearm on the back of the blade. Blade overall about perfect, bright and clean with just one tiny nick.

The hilt, in classic small sword form is of iron, delicately pierced overall , including quillon and knuckle bow, with a leaf / vine motif into which is incorporated the gilded figures of dozens of small game animals, including rabbits, stags, birds and bores. Fierce gilded open mouthed eagle head where the knuckle bow enter the ball pommel, which includes a capstan. Hilt overall about perfect and retains 90% of the gilt highlighting. Retains the original black leather back stitched scabbard in very fine sound condition with just some minor scuffing/flaking and incised line decoration. Fits the sword perfectly and snugly and obviously period and indigenous.

A really beautiful little sword in a very rare form and especially desirable with this early date.
