Absolutely Authentic Civil War U.S. M1840 Medical Staff Officer's Sword with Presentation. 28" blade near mint. Just a few very minor abrasions/scratches else perfect. Etched for half its length with floral/scroll motifs, arms panoply and central theme of spread wing eagle with shield and motto engraved in riband above on obverse. Reverse with nearly identical etch, neither side includes any reference to medical staff. Regulation style hilt about perfect with separately affixed silver MS on front langet. The scabbard is about perfect, retaining 10% of the original gilt primarily around the regulation style mounts, else a nice even patina. Inscribed in script between the top mount and the throat "Surgeon J. P. Wilson / The men of the 5th Mich Cavalry / Present this token of respect". The inscription is highlighted with additional engraved lines above and below. Very delicate work and absolutely period. Wilson served as the Surgeon of the 5th Michigan Cav. from 9/2/62 to 10/23/63. The unit was heavily engaged throughout Wilson's term of service including Gettysburg. Very nice sword with very desirable history.
