    Description

Absolutely Authentic 1859 US Revenue Marine Associated Presentation Sword. The sword is a form we have encountered only rarely in the past and is possibly a form that was, during the period, associated with or favored by, Revenue Marine officers. Inscribed in script on the face of the brass scabbard below the lower ring mount, ""Presented to Lieut Patr Friel of the 9th Ward Volunteers / by the U. S. Revenue Officers Stationed at Brooklyn / as a token of their esteem Nov. 24th 1859." Although the history of , and reason for, the presentation is unknown, Lt. Patrick Friel had subsequent service in the U. S. Navy in the West Gulf Squadron from March 1864 to Sept. 1865, including on board the USS Kanawha, and the sword is accompanied by substantial research and records on Friel.

The sword has a 30" straight blade that is etched on both sides for half its length with floral/scroll motifs and arms panoplies, along with leaf etching on the back. The blade is overall about mint. The lobe guard is decorated with deep relief scrollwork and military motifs. The cross guard is S shaped terminating in animal heads with the center section displaying cast military motifs. The formed rectangular shaped pommel is decorated on both sides with a wing like motif. Fluted ivory grip perfect with nice mellow patina, brass chain guard. Overall a most unusual form and the first we have encountered this exact decoration, the hilt being overall about perfect. The all brass scabbard is excellent but showing signs of honest use with some scattered dents and very obvious wear on the inscription. The scabbard is profusely decorated with engraved floral and geometric motifs above and below the ring mounts and the decorated frog stud. There is an engraved decoration including an American shield and flag next to the inscription and the lower mount is separately affixed with deeply cast scroll decoration. The reverse of the scabbard is plain. A very rare sword with a superb history with much research yet to be done.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
