    Description

Absolutely As Originally Manufactured, Leech & Rigdon Pattern, Memphis, Tenn. Confederate Mounted Staff Officer's Sword Utilizing A US Blade. The 35" blade is completely unmarked but appears to be from a M1860 US cavalry saber with 5/8" ricasso and deep narrow fuller along the top edge of the central fuller. Blade generally smooth with scattered dark patina and absolutely no rust, pitting or edge nicks. Retains the original leather washer. The hilt is of the regulation form generally encountered on Leech & Rigdon staff swords of this pattern with CS pierced in the basket, slotted for sword knot and exhibiting the normally encountered rivet where the guard enters the pommel although in this example it is of copper rather than iron as on the other example listed in this catalog. Distinctive oval flattened rosette on the face of the pommel at the juncture of the leaf decoration. Hilt overall perfect and untouched. On this example the grip is of black polished wood with tight twisted brass wire wrap and perfect. The iron scabbard with plain scalloped brass mounts and brass carrying rings. The drag is distinctive and about identical to that on the other example of this sword listed in this catalog. Iron throat and the top brass mount is set 1 1/4" down from the throat. Brass mounts with nice patina and one dent front and back at the same spot on both sides of the lower mount. The mounts are attached by brass screws, the screw on the middle mount missing. The iron scabbard with deep dark patina and an untouched coat of old dry surface that blends with the patina, but no pitting. A fascinating Confederate sword, and superb example of the Confederate proclivity for using captured US parts in the manufacture of many of their weapons. Ex-Steve Hess Collection.
