    Description

    A Gold Damascened Indian Mughal Tulwar, 18th Century.

    30 1/2-inch blade, the single edged watered-steel blade of curved form. Both sides of blade engraved and inlaid in gold with inscription filled cartouches, possibly maker or who it was made for. Steel sword hilt with exquisite gold damascened koftgari floral decoration, the scrolling handguard with large disc pommel, one-inch spike and round finial. Approximately 36-inches overall. NOTE: According to Stone's, A Glossary of the Construction, Decoration and Use of Arms and Armor, Tulwars [Talwar, Tulwuar, Tarwar], "The Indian Sabre, class name. It includes all of the curved swords used in India; but those of very marked curvature are frequently called by their Persian name, shamshir."

    Condition: Very good. Small chip to blade tip. Edge appears to have been sharpened at some point. Some trivial spots of pitting. Small losses, wear to koftgari. The Estate of the Late Hiroshi Harada of Piedmont, California.
