Superb Quality Silver Grip Civil War Sword Presented to Lt. Secor Hyatt 95th New York Vols. Hyatt enlisted as a sergeant in the 95th New York, from Sing Sing, N. Y., on 12/30/61. He was promoted to 2nd Lieut. 2/1/63 and 1st Lieut., commanding Co. I on 10/9/63. He became the regimental quartermaster 3/7/65 and mustered out "in the field" 7/16/65. The 95th New York, the "Warren Rifles", along with Hyatt, were present for every major engagement of the Army of the Potomac including Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, losing 119 men killed and mortally wounded.32 1/2" blade excellent with just some scattered very minor staining. The obverse displays a spread wing eagle with shield on breast and riband above, surrounded by rays and flanked by scroll work on the obverse, with a very elaborate large US intertwined with vines and flanked by scrollwork on the reverse. Marked on the reverse ricasso "W. CLAUBERG / Solingen" with standing knight. Hilt with the heavy basket pierced with scrollwork and leaves, with additional scrollwork and leaves on the quillon, and where the knucklebow enters the pommel- Slotted at the top for sword knot. The heavy pommel cap with serrations along the top edge, cast scrollwork around the edges with the balance covered with scroll engraving. Silver grip with plain vertical panels alternating with those deeply embossed with oak leaves. The hilt retains 80% of the original gilt. Hilt overall perfect.
German silver scabbard with brass throat. The very heavy ring mounts cast with laurel leaves and berries with embossed stippled panels above and below with each mount terminating in deeply cast, fine quality, relief scrollwork. The lower mount with similar embossed stippled panels with the same deeply cast scrollwork at the top. Two tiny dents on the reverse of the lower mount, else the scabbard and mounts are perfect, retaining much of the original gilt. The balance of the mounts as well as the scabbard with nice light untouched patina. The sword is inscribed in script between the ring mounts, "Presented to / Lieut. Secor Hyatt / Co. I 95th N. Y. V. / by his Company / Feb. 9th 1864."
A beautiful sword from a member of a very heavily fought regiment, who served through nearly the entire war.
