    Description

Superb Presentation Tiffany & Company 1860 Staff and Field Officers' S Sword. A beautiful sword featuring a 31¾" straight diamond-shaped blade in cross section, etched with floral and patriotic decoration and marked "Tiffany/ & Co./ NY". The blade displays a few scattered areas of spotting, but it remains bright, smooth and without pitting. The brass guard is made without a counter guard and is liberally decorated with floral and patriotic scenes. The grip is in perfect condition and is complete with original wire wrapping. The scabbard features a brass drag and ornate brass mounts and rings. The scabbard is in excellent condition, though it is missing the throat. This finely made sword features a rather extensive inscription under the guard which reads: "Captain John W. McKim A.Q.M. U.S.A/ From / G. G. White, N. G. Davis, C. Caverly Jr./ D. M. Smith, J. T. Buswell, James Ward and C. H. Folsom/ Boston November 6, 1863". This sword was presented to McKim as he mustered into the army as a captain on October 30, 1863. That same day he was commissioned into the U.S. Volunteer Quartermaster's Department as an Assistant Quartermaster. He was brevetted major on March 13, 1865 and mustered out of the army May 7, 1867.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
