    Superb Condition, Brass Hilt Civil War Non-Regulation Staff Officer's Sword By Tomes Son & Melvain. 32" blade about mint retaining 98% of the original brilliant luster. Obverse with scroll etched panel at the base and 7" etched panel with spread wing eagle and motto flanked by scroll work in the center. Etched on the ricasso "Tomes Son / Melvain / New York" Inset in the ricasso is a small brass disc marked proved. Reverse with nearly identical etching but with large block U. S. in the center panel and marked on the ricasso "W. / Clauberg / Solingen" with armored knight. Blade retains the original white buff leather washer. All brass hilt having the basket pierced with elaborate scrollwork and spread wing eagle holding riband with motto in its beak surmounting US. All highlighted with profuse cast and engraved details. Two outboard branches with a small inboard branch and pierced reverse counterguard. The guard is pierced for a sword knot at the top. Stepped birdhead pommel with full backstrap and decorative 1/2" ferrule at the base of the sharkskin grip which is triple wire wrapped. Hilt and grip overall about perfect. Iron scabbard about perfect with no dents, retaining most of the original brown finish mixing with dark patina. Brass ring mounts, throat and elaborate drag also perfect with nice untouched patina. An exceptional example of this popular and desirable form Civil War sword in superb condition by a very desirable maker.
