    Spanish American War Presentation U.S. M1860 Staff & Field Officer's Sword. 31" blade with 1 1/2" ricasso, diamond shaped in cross section. Overall about perfect condition and etched for one half its length with floral/scrollwork, spread wing American eagle and maker's logo "HORSTMANN / PHILADELPHIA" on obverse. Reverse with similar motifs but including a Large US, and crossed American flags with American shield. Marked at the base of the ricasso "GERMANY. Regulation style hilt but with a tucked wing eagle flanked by flag panoplies on guard. Knucklebow with cast floral rosette, and leaves and scrollwork where it enters the pommel. The pommel with deep relief, finely detailed, spread wing eagle on the face with scroll work and shield on the reverse. Sharkskin grips with brass wire wrap perfect with 1/2" brass ferrules at top and bottom decorated with embossed laurel leaves and berries. The folding reverse counterguard with a wreath composed of oak leaves and acorns on one side, and laurel leaves and berries on the other, surrounding a detailed arms panoply with American shield in the center. Hilt overall about perfect retaining much original gilt. Regulation style nickel plated scabbard with brass throat, brass ring mounts, decorated with laurel leaves and berries, and brass drag with cast floral rosette and leaf design. The scabbard is overall mint.

    The sword bears the following inscription in block and script letters on the underside of the guard: "Capt. Frank S. Miller / PRESENTED BY / Co. H 4TH REGIMENT MISSOURI US VOLS / JUNE 1898." The 4th Missouri was mustered into US service for the Spanish American War on May 16, 1898.
