Silver Grip Presentation Grade Inscribed Civil War Naval Officer's Sword by Miller & Co. New York with Fascinating History. 31" blade very fine - near mint, with just some scattered minor staining. Etched for over half its length with the obverse displaying stand of arms, oval surrounded by stars, panel with anchor and American shield and floral/scroll work. Reverse with oak leaves intertwined with a rope, riband with engraved USN, fouled anchor and eagle surmounting cannon on Naval mount. Marked in the etch above the ricasso "MILLER / & Co. / NEW YORK. Retains most of the original leather washer. Hilt of regulation style but with embossed silver grip with double strand brass wire wrap. The scabbard is in excellent, very sound condition, with just some minor finish crackling and a few tiny areas of flaking. Top mount with knot ring mount engraved in large block letters "U (star) S / N" the letters filled with stippling and inside a floral wreath. Scrollwork below. The middle rope work ring mount with scroll engraving above and below. Lower mount with dolphin/serpent drag and covered with leaf/geometric and scroll engraving. On the reverse on the top mount engraved in script ""F. G. R. Lennan" / G. N. Armstrong, which has been engraved over with a stippled scroll to attempt to cover it / Hampden, Me." All mounts perfect with nice untouched light patina.

    F. G. R. Lennan was appointed Acting Ensign February 16, 1864 and discharged January 30, 1867. G. N. Armstrong was appointed Acting Ensign July 15, 1863 and his appointment was revoked November 20, 1863, with the obvious implication that Armstrong sold or gave the sword to Lennan subsequent to his dismissal, and before or shortly after Lennan's appointment. Fascinating inscription, the likes of which we've never seen before, and worthy of additional diligent research.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
