Scottish Baskethilt Broadsword, Possibly Commissioned by Michael Drummond.

Approximately 32-inch double edge blade. Blade is 1-inch wide at the base. Two narrow central fullers on each side. Conical pommel with incised decoration. Leather covered grip with steel wire. Heavy pieced decorated baskethilt with hearts. Blade etching on both sides with multiple patters and features. One side reads 42 RD / HIGHLANDERS obverse crown beneath rays. A nice example. Consignor included paperwork pertaining to the 42nd (The Royal Highland) Regiment of Foot. In it, some correspondence between him and Windsor Herald of the Museum discuss who might have commissioned the sword presented here and without coming to a positive conclusion, he mentions Michael Drummond who became Viscount Forth and was commissioned into The Black Watch on the 4th November 1853 and retired a year later on the 17th November 1854. See scanned copies online.

Condition: Good to very good for its age. Scattered pitting throughout. Moderate wear to etching and overall blade. Some nicks and pitting to edge. Baskethilt with a mellow dark patina. Grip good with minor wear, lose washer.
