    Description

Regulation US M1840 Pay Department Sword By Ames. 29" regulation style blade with deep floral/scrollwork etch, along with caduceus on pole (interestingly all Ames swords for the Pay Department include this etched detail, apparently using the same pattern as for the Medical Staff with the only difference being the central panel) central panel in script flanked by star and rays "U. S. Pay Department". Reverse with similar etch (including caduceus) but with spread wing eagle with motto engraved in riband above and panel at the base of the blade engraved with Ames logo "Ames Mfg. Co. / Chicopee / Mass.". The sword has a smooth dark patina but the etch stands out crisply. Absolutely no rust or pitting with some tiny scattered nicks that are really negligible. Regulation style hilt retains 80% of the original gilt with separately affixed old English letters "P D" on front langet for Pay Department. The sword overall completely untouched, there is no scabbard. A very rare sword either Civil War period or slightly earlier.

From the estate of Houston collector Brent Burg.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
