really Exceptional Condition Regulation Civil War US M1850 Staff and Field Officer's Sword by Horstmann. 31" slightly curved blade about mint and etched for 2/3 its length with scrollwork, arms panoplies including American shield with stars, and spread wing eagle with shield on breast and etched motto in riband above. Maker's logo in etched panel at the base "W. H. / Horstmann & Sons / Philadelphia".Reverse with scrollwork and large crossed flag and arms panoplies with large block US in the center. Crowned head proof on the ricasso. The blade retains the original leather washer. Regulation hilt about perfect retaining much of the original gilt and sharkskin grip with triple wire wrap mint. Guard slotted for sword knot at the top. Brass mounted iron scabbard, the scabbard with absolutely no dents and retaining 100% of what we believe to be a professionally, and basically impossible to detect, restored brown finish. Scalloped edge brass mounts with deep cast floral/scroll work decoration on both sides of the ring mounts and brass carrying rings. Brass throat perfect. The mounts near perfect with one deep scratch on the top mount and a few small scattered shallow dents on the lower mount. Despite the likely restoration of the scabbard finish a truly stunning example of this pure regulation and very desirable field grade officer's Civil War sword.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
