    Description

Rare US M1840 Artillery Officer's Saber By Horstmann Bros. & Co, New York. Very likely a pre Civil War example with the scabbard made without a throat. and fitting into a recess under the guard. 31/ 1/2" blade about mint, retaining most of the original luster and etched for 2/3 its length. The obverse displays very delicately executed etching including extensive scrollwork as well as arms and flag panoplies, all highlighted with hand engraving. The is a cartouche incorporating the letters "K & C" on the ricasso. The reverse bears very similar etching with just different configurations of the arms/flag panoplies and is deeply marked on the ricasso "Horstmann / Bros. & Co. / New York". Regulation style hilt with floral rosette on the heavy quillon, scroll/leaf cast decoration on the knucklebow and deep relief laurel leaf decoration with floral decoration on the face of the pommel cap. Interestingly the top of the pommel is plain and domed and does not reveal the blade tang. The hilt retains 20% of the original gold wash. The plain iron scabbard is near perfect with deep dark untouched patina and absolutely no rust or pitting, just a few old shallow dents on the reverse, minor. Fabricated without a throat with the ring mounts screwed in place. A really exceptional example of a very scarce American officer's saber especially being a pre Civil War example.
