    Description

Rare Form, Inscribed, American Militia Officer's Sword By Ames C. 1840. Nearly identical to Peterson FIG 70. 28 1/2" straight blade with median ridge, etched for 2/3 its length. Very fine condition with touches of luster and absolutely no rust, pitting or edge nicks. The obverse exhibits scroll and floral motifs, arms panoply and the central theme of a spread wing American eagle with riband with hand engraved motto above, which is then surmounted by stars and rays. The reverse exhibits similar motifs but with a center flag panoply, also surmounted by stars and rays. The base of the blade exhibits a scroll panel which is delicately hand engraved "Ames Mfg. Co. / Cabotville / Mass." The blade retains the original leather washer. All mountings are what Peterson describes as "white brass" but certainly appear to us to be German silver. Cross guard with scalloped decoration along the top edge, acorn finials and shell like langets. The pistol grip pommel is decorated with deep line embossing at the back, and uses a full backstrap which is inscribed in block letters "R. W. Bigelow" and absolutely of the period. There is a 1/2" plain ferrule at the base of the carved ivory grip which shows nice mellow patina and some minor age hairlines but perfectly sound. Chain guard composed of circular links. The German silver scabbard, with median ridge, about perfect, with embossed decoration on the ring mounts and inscribed in block letters "R. W. B." between the mounts. Scabbard also incorporates a rather rudimentary drag. Cursory research has revealed no information on Bigelow but certainly worthy of further effort to ascertain his ID and history. Exceptional example of this very scarce form of American sword and the first inscribed example we've seen.
