    Rare Confederate Short Artillery Sword by Memphis Novelty Works, Memphis, Tennessee. Unmarked 18-inch double-edged straight blade. One-piece sand cast brass hilt with integral crossguard, the quillon finials with letters C & S on both sides for Confederate States. Simulated fishscale grip with ovoid pommel. No scabbard. Modeled after the U.S. Model 1832 Artillery Short Sword. Sold together with documents on the sword from the original retailer. Originally founded as Thomas Leech & Company, Memphis Novelty Works began in early 1861. Thomas Leech, a former cotton broker, constituted its sole proprietor at the time. Leech manufactured swords, sabers, knives and bayonets in the fall of 1861 and 1862. Leech became partners with Charles H. Rigdon from Missouri. The company was best known for its manufacture of swords, and Memphis Novelty Works was a Confederate contractor, making many of these short pattern artillery swords. Condition: Good. Blade showing wear, sharpening and patina commensurate with age of sword. Hilt with wear, patina and marks from use. No scabbard.
