    Presentation Grade Silver Grip Civil War Foot Officers' Sword, Tomes, Son & Melvain. 30 ½" blade, lacking approximately 1" to the tip. Each side of the blade is ornately decorated in floral scroll, with a "U.S." on the reverse and Federal shield on the obverse. The reverse ricasso is marked "TOMES, SON & MELVAIN / NEW YORK". The blade has a uniform gray color with scattered dark spots, a few nicks on the cutting edge and the broken tip as noted. The silver grips and gilded-brass hilt display a chocolate-brown patina. A small script "ME" is engraved on the guard which research indicates issue to senior officers' from the State of Maine. The sword is offered lacking the scabbard.
